Dr. Anke Kuegler

Postdoctoral Researcher, Ocean Giants

Dr. Anke Kügler is a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Ocean Giants Program at WCS. She works on analyzing archived acoustic recordings from the WCS, WHOI and Equinor PAM program in the Equinor Wind Lease 0512 to characterize the soundscape in the New York Bight and to identify how natural and anthropogenic factors contribute to patterns in ambient noise. Her main research interest is the intersection of the ecology of acoustically active cetaceans with their management in light of global change. After obtaining a M.Sc. in Ecology from the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena in Germany, Anke completed a Ph.D. at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. For her original dissertation research, she paired passive acoustic monitoring with visual observations to study spatiotemporal patterns of humpback whales across the Hawaiian archipelago. Anke has over 15 years of experience conducting cetacean research in numerous projects around the world and across a wide range of species, leading to extensive experience in a variety of research methods, including (but not limited to) PAM, photo-identification, land-based and vessel-based observations, and multivariate modeling. She has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles, conference presentations, and technical reports.
