Dr. Amelia Wenger

Conservation Scientist and Water Pollution Program Lead

Dr. Amelia Wenger is Conservation Scientist and Water Pollution Program Lead with WCS’s global coral reef conservation and science programs and a Research Fellow at the University of Queensland in Australia.

She completed her undergraduate degree at Barnard College in New York, during which time started her marine biology career as a volunteer at WCS’s New York Aquarium. Amelia completed her PhD in Coral Reef Ecology at James Cook University in Australia.

Her research investigates how land-use change and pollution influences coral reefs, with an emphasis on how to better manage these impacts. She has published 40+ publications in leading scientific journals, including Nature and Conservation Letters and has received international recognition for her research.

Passionate about integrated approaches to conservation, she is the lead PI of the Improving Coastal Health working group through the Science for Nature and People Partnership, which is developing decision guides for ocean-friendly sanitation that can meet human and ecosystem health goals. She is also on the inaugural Steering Committee of the Ocean Sewage Alliance.
