Dr. Rhett Bennett
Scientific Director, Shark and Ray Conservation
Rhett holds a PhD in Fisheries Science from Rhodes University in South Africa. He works closely with WCS country programs to conduct scientific research on sharks and rays, engage with coastal communities for more sustainable fishing practices, and support governments to strengthen national policies, implement global commitments for shark and ray conservation, and tackle illegal trade in shark and ray products. Rhett collaborates widely with academic institutions, government agencies, NGOs and other partners, and holds the position of Co-Regional Vice Chair for Africa, under the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Shark Specialist Group.
