Michelle Wieland
Technical Director, Sudano Sahel Region
Michelle Wieland is the Technical Director of WCS’s Sudano Sahel Region and a key member of the global Rights+Communities team based in WCS’s Africa Hub. A Fulbright fellow with a PhD in conservation biology and minor in development studies, she’s worked since 1999 in Africa at the people-biodiversity interface.
She focuses on strategic program design and team strengthening to reduce threats to wildlife through sound natural resource governance & management, behavior change strategies, and the strengthening of socially & ecologically sustainable rural livelihoods. Program interests include community-based natural resource management and governance, transhumance, wicked problems (artisanal mining, unsustainable wild meat consumption), and strengthening partnerships between protected areas and people.
