Celebrating Our Seas

In fall 2012, WCS will begin construction on “Ocean Wonders Sharks!” This 57,000-square-foot building at the New York Aquarium will house 115 species of marine animals—including 25 shark species—along with 500,000 gallons of water.

Sharks are increasingly threatened by overfishing to supply the fin trade. As demand for shark fin soup grows, some species have, in recent decades, declined in abundance by up to 90 percent from fishing pressure. By drawing attention to these marine animals, WCS also pays homage to the New York Seascape. New Yorkers may be surprised to learn that more than three dozen species of sharks and rays are found off our coast, including wild relatives of this sand tiger shark shown here.
