Turtles in the Spotlight

Turtles in the Spotlight Photo
This Roti Island snake-necked turtle is one of seven to reside at WCS’s Bronx Zoo, as part of an assurance colony. The Roti was discovered in 1994 and subsequently hunted to near-extinction. Only a few scattered individuals remain in the wild.

In honor of
World Turtle Day, WCS announced progress in its effort to restore some of the world’s most endangered turtles, an effort that combines the creation of assurance colonies at its zoos with in-country field conservation work.
