Nearly 40 years after the release of Jaws, people still find it difficult to swallow the truth: sharks have much more to fear from us than we do from them. Despite growing awareness of the impact of overfishing on shark species, the global demand for shark product remains strong. As Dr. Rachel Graham, director of WCS’s Gulf and Caribbean Sharks and Rays Program, writes in the New York Times, “effective reduction in both the overfishing and consumption of sharks will require multiple creative approaches in areas where sharks continue to have critical economic and cultural value.”
