Rainbows on the Rise

Flashes of red, blue, and yellow stream above the treetops of Guatemalan forests. This year, the Maya Biosphere Reserve’s scarlet macaw population of only 300 or so parrots has added 29 new members to the flock. Hatched and raised with the help of WCS conservationists, the once at-risk fledglings are now flying wild. In 2003, just one bird emerged out of 15 nests. Through careful monitoring and observations—including some made by climbing tall trees—the researchers gave the latest batch of birds a boost. As adults, the colorful parrots still may face threats of habitat destruction and the pet trade.
