Turtles in Trouble

The painted terrapin, which hails from Indonesia and Malaysia, ranks among the 25 most endangered freshwater turtles on the planet.

In a new effort launched this week, WCS will work to save more than a dozen of these species and avert a looming extinction crisis for turtles and tortoises across the globe. Strategies include the breeding and reintroduction of some species, the development of assurance colonies (captive groups of animals maintained so that no genetic diversity is lost) for others, and various conservation projects in the field. WCS will use its four zoos and aquarium, its health program, and conservation field program to meet this challenge.
