- WCS conservationist Stacy Jupiter snapped this shot of a longnose hawkfish while exploring the reefs of Fiji’s Namena Marine Reserve. Unlike many other coral reef sites that have become degraded, these waters, part of the Vatu-i-Ra Seascape, remain vibrant and diverse, making them a high priority for marine conservation in the Pacific Ocean.
As Fiji Country Program Director, Jupiter has worked with the communities of Kubulau District since 2005 to set up a network of marine protected areas (MPAs). Namena Marine Reserve is the largest MPA in Fiji, and is often referred to by conservationists as “Grand Central,” given its vast number of intersecting schools of fish.
