September 1 marks “International Vulture Awareness Day,” a day devoted to ecologically valuable birds facing innumerable threats. Of the 21 vulture species spanning the globe, eight are threatened with extinction. Known scavengers, vultures play a crucial role in the ecosystems they inhabit: by consuming carcasses, they dispose of meat that would otherwise contaminate land and water and put opportunists at high risk of disease.

For decades, WCS has protected the ecosystems housing vultures, and we work to conserve Asian vultures by leading the Cambodian Vulture Conservation Program. Learn more about our work with white-rumped vultures here.
