Year of the Rhino

Yesterday, President Yudhoyono of Indonesia announced the commencement of the Year of the Rhino. All five rhino species face mounting threats—primarily from illegal hunting and the rhino horn trade—and the Javan and Sumatran Rhinos are among the most endangered animals in Indonesia. The President’s call to action is buttressed by the support of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other conservation organizations, including WCS.

Ongoing rescue efforts have helped populations of certain rhino species, including the pictured Indian rhinoceros. Still, the majority of Indian rhinos are restricted to Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage Site that also boasts the highest density of tigers living in protected areas.
