Working Hand-in-Paw

Working Hand-in-Paw Photo
As part of a broad spectrum of efforts to stop wildlife poaching, WCS provides technical support to the Gabonese National Parks Agency’s sniffer dog unit. Well known as man’s best friend, these dogs are also trained to be friends to African elephants by detecting shipments of illegal ivory at airports, shipping ports, and roadway checkpoints. Cooper, a highly methodical lab, and Lumi, an energetic spaniel, work hard at their jobs with the help of dedicated handlers Medelick Biteghe bi Nze (left) and Price Meye (right), along with Jean Pierre Zue Ongoro (center), the detection dog unit driver and assistant.
