Fiji’s Coastal Treasures

Fiji is leading a new approach to conservation: locally managed marine areas (LMMAs). Originally intended to protect food sources for coastal communities, these efforts have simultaneously encouraged global biodiversity. In fact, a new study by WCS and partners at the University of Queensland and James Cook University estimates that LMMAs will protect up to 18 percent of Fiji’s coastal and inshore marine habitats by 2020.

These results don’t merely bode well for Fiji; they offer promise to a broad network of community-based marine guardians. In the Philippines, more than 1,500 locally managed marine protected areas have been established.
