An Elephant Caress

An Elephant Caress Photo
An elephant and her calf stay close in Africa’s Rift Valley. A new book, by the photographer of this snapshot and Director of WCS’s Albertine Rift Program, Andrew Plumptre, documents environmental changes to this region, one of the planet’s richest in wildlife. Over the past 50–100 years, the Albertine Rift has faced a variety of challenges from climate change, pressures on wildlife and plant communities, and changes in both human demography and attitudes toward conservation. For elephants in particular, migration routes have been severed as human population has expanded.

The book also documents how well-managed protected areas with good law enforcement have saved wildlife in the region, despite decades of insecurity and war.
