Chimps of Budongo

Chimps of Budongo Photo
WCS Staff Photographer Julie Larsen Maher caught this glimpse of a female chimpanzee and its infant wandering across the treetops in Budongo Forest, Uganda. Researchers have named this adult female “Melissa,” and her baby “Butera.”

WCS conservationists have studied Budongo’s Sonso community of chimps for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, these great apes face growing threats from human settlement, increased logging, poaching, and habitat fragmentation. WCS and partners are working to safeguard the population and their forest home, and to develop regional action plans for the conservation of chimpanzees across their range.
