Home on the Plains

Home on the Plains Photo

The Northern Great Plains are known for golden wheat fields and cattle ranches, covering parts of South Dakota through Montana, spreading up to Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada. The wide reaching perimeter has been compromised twice. Once, when it lost its great herds of American bison that had grazed and shaped the vegetation for centuries, and a second time when its native grasslands were converted into crop fields. Presently, massive drilling and fracking for oil in the Bakken formation in the Dakotas, Montana, and nearby Canada is occurring at great risk to bison, grassland birds, and other wildlife.
