A Tiny Feast

The zunzuncito, AKA bee hummingbird, is the world’s smallest bird and a resident of Cuba. This week brought good news for the tiny creature and the flowers it feeds on. A project to conserve the island nation’s plant life—food sources for hundreds of bird species, among other wildlife—received $50,000 after winning a 2012 Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP) award.

In total, the awards will support 28 conservation projects in 22 countries. Projects range from changing attitudes of youth in Amur tiger habitat in Russia to assessing the conservation status and economic importance of Kenya's marlin fisheries. The CLP partnership includes the Wildlife Conservation Society, Fauna & Flora International, BirdLife International, and Conservation International. To learn more, read the press release.
