Application Guidelines and Procedures

NEXT DEADLINE:  March 15, 2008

INTRODUCTION
Please read the following guidelines before submitting an application. The application coversheet can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of the page.

RESTRICTIONS
Please consider the following restrictions before submitting your proposal:

  • Organizations are not eligible for funding.
  • There may be only one Principle Investigator (PI).
  • Faculty and/or research advisors should not be listed as the PI unless they plan to conduct the majority of the fieldwork.
  • The PI must write the proposal. Applications written on behalf of another individual are not allowed.
  • Translation by a third party is permitted, however, applications are accepted in English, French and Spanish only. In addition, the abstract must be written in English.
  • Previous research fellows are not eligible to apply for another RFP.
  • Proposals must be independent of ongoing WCS projects and programs.

The RFP does not support:

  • Conference attendance
  • Expeditions
  • Travel to scientific meetings
  • Legal actions
  • Construction of permanent field stations
  • Tuition expenses
  • Salary for PI (though salary for field assistants is acceptable)
  • Overhead costs
  • Costly laboratory analyses
  • Gene storage
  • Vehicle purchase
  • Computer purchase
  • Captive breeding

While salaries for PIs are not supported, PIs who have no other source of support may request modest per-diem expenses. Proposals may be submitted simultaneously to other funding organizations but WCS must be informed of the organization, the amount requested, and status.  Please clearly indicate in the budget which component you request WCS to fund and which is requested from other organizations.

APPLICATION DIRECTIONS
We require that you submit your proposal in electronic format in Microsoft Word by email to fellowship@wcs.org. If you are unable to provide an electronic version, please contact the Program Coordinator to make special arrangements. This electronic version should be a single document in MS Word. Name your file with your last name, the country of research, and the RFP cycle (Year & March for March deadline or Year & September for September deadline), separated by underscores. For example, if Jane Smith is submitting an application for the September 15, 2007 deadline, the name of file will be:

Smith_India_2007September.doc

You may download the proposal coversheet at the link below. Your proposal must include all items listed on the Project Outline (included with coversheet at link below), and must have proposal sections numbered according to the Project Outline list. Make sure to also number the pages of your proposal.

Applications may be submitted in English, French, or Spanish; however, the coversheet and abstract must be in English.
