WCS research on bear - human conflict in the Adirondacks
In the summers of 2003 and 2004, WCS surveyed backpackers in the Adirondacks to explore the human element of black bear - human conflict in the Adirondacks. Some specific goals of the studies were to learn about users’ attitudes about bears, bear encounters, what people use to store food, and where people are getting information about food storage in the Adirondacks.
One result of this research is an upcoming technical paper on the results of the 2003 survey. We hope to release this paper in May, 2006. You can contact us to be notified when the paper is released.
In addition to summarizing results of the survey regarding users' perceptions on bears, food storage, and information sources, the technical paper also identifies opportunities for improving the effectiveness of the educational message and increasing the awareness of using bear resistant food canisters in the region. The BBEAR program has already begun to implement some of these opportunities through our education and outreach work.

DEC's research on Adirondack black bears
NYSDEC Region 5 Wildlife unit is conducting research on black bears in the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness Area to determine the home ranges, seasonal movements, habitat use, and behavior of black bears in the area, and to develop a nuisance black bear management plan. You can learn about the DEC study here.
