WCS Marine in Africa

Cetacean Conservation and Research Program
The Cetacean Conservation and Research Program (CCRP), a joint program between the American Museum of Natural History and the Wildlife Conservation Society, is dedicated to protecting endangered whales and dolphins and their critical habitats through integrated conservation research, capacity-building, education, and community involvement at local, regional, and international management levels.  The CCRP also utilizes genetics to assess 'conservation units' to improve management decisions for a variety of cetaceans globally.

Kenya:Coral Reef Conservation
The Coral Reef Conservation Project was started in 1986 to study the impacts of fishing, snail collection, and river sediments on Kenya’s coral reefs.

Madagascar:Marine Program
Madagascar’s large latitudinal range and ‘upstream’ location in relation to eastern and southern Africa, provide suitable environments for most of the marine species and habitat-types of the region and make Madagascar a regional conservation priority.

Western Indian Ocean
The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region encompasses the mainland states of eastern Africa and the island states of the Indian Ocean. The marine ecosystems of the region are dominated by coral reefs, mangrove forests, and sea grass beds
