Sea Turtles

Nicaragua
Critical nesting and feeding habitat for endangered sea turtles occurs in the offshore waters and on the cays and mainland of Caribbean Nicaragua.

Gulf of Guinea
Although it has been found that Gulf of Guinea hosts mportant feeding, nesting, and developmental sites, there are very few updated information is available. WCS is committed to providing the most recent and relevant data through scienfitic research.

Panama
The Wildlife Conservation Society has been conducting science-based sea turtle conservation in Panama since 1989.  Initial efforts revealed the importance of Panama beaches as a site for nesting by leatherbacks and home to a remnant hawksbill population. The beach had once been described as the most important site for hawksbill nesting in the Caribbean, but decades of harvest to supply international markets for tortoiseshell had reduced the nesting population by ~98%.

Belize
It has been reported that sea turtles nest on over 30 cayes and a few coastal mainland areas in Belize. Despite the implementation of protection measures, sea turtle nesting populations in Belize continue to decline. Belize sea turtle nesting populations face numerous threats including habitat alteration and destruction from coastal development, excessive mammalian predation, and from fisheries throughout their foraging habitats in Belize and elsewhere.
