Docent Opportunities

Dear Prospective Docent:

Thank you for your interest in our Docent Program. You are welcome to apply if you are 15 years or older, interested in marine science, and want to share your passion for aquatic life with others. After an intensive training, docents contribute to the mission of the New York Aquarium in many ways, showing people how to handle animals at the touch tank, teaching visitors about marine habitats and animals, assisting Aquarium instructors with programs and preparation, and providing other support as needed.

Participation in this program offers the opportunity to develop or fine-tune skills and knowledge, and to meet and interact with staff, other volunteers, and visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Docents improve their understanding of marine life and career opportunities, enhance their ability to speak in public and teach effectively, and gain a sense of satisfaction through their volunteer activities.

After an interview and orientation, accepted candidates must attend all training sessions. The training includes sessions on marine science, public speaking skills, and activities designed to foster good relations among docents. The course must be successfully completed before one can work in the program.

Submitting an application is your first step to taking advantage of this exciting opportunity! Click here for a printable application.  If you are under 18 years of age, please have a teacher fill out the recommendation form and have a parent sign in the designated area. We offer a fall and summer training.

The next training will begin on Friday, June 27th.  An interview is mandatory. We will call you to schedule an interview when we receive your application.
