| Scientific observations indicate increases in global air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level is impacting the make up of our planet. These changes have grave effects on Earth’s ecosystems and natural habitats. We are at a risk of losing several wildlife species and their natural habitats due to widespread deforestation coupled with other severe climatic changes. To ensure a sustainable use of our forests, the Farm Bill included provisions to combat illegal logging that destroys wildlife habitat around the world, generates 20-25% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation, and undercuts prices for American timber products legally imported. Congresswoman McCarthy was pleased to serve as a member of the conference committee that negotiated the final version of the Farm Bill and ensure that these provisions to prohibit illegal timber practices were retained in the enacted legislation. The Wildlife Conservation Society thanks the Congresswoman for being a champion for forest conservation. About the Wildlife Conservation Society
The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. We do so through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony. WCS is committed to this mission because it is essential to the integrity of life on Earth. For more information, please visit: www.wcs.org
