| The WCS Adirondack Program received a funding boost from the State of New York to help two of the Park’s municipalities achieve “Smart Growth.” The Town of Long Lake and the Town of Fine, among other Adirondack communities, were awarded the grants by New York State Governor David A. Paterson and Commissioner of Environmental Conservation Pete Grannis.
The Adirondack Smart Growth Program helps communities link sustainable development, environmental protection, and quality of life within the unique context of the Adirondack Park. The grants promote collaboration between local government, environmental organizations, and economic development interests to build a common vision for sustainable Adirondack communities and natural resource protection. The Adirondack Park, the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, consists of 6 million acres of public and private lands and presents unique challenges and opportunities that can greatly benefit from Smart Growth.
By working with Long Lake and Fine to implement environmentally sensitive community planning, the WCS Adirondack Program will help preserve wildlife habitat and open space, promote sustainable community development, and support conservation leaders in Adirondack communities.
